A.M: Lonely Boy Evaluation

-

Evaluation of video:

Black Keys are an indie rock band. We decided to include a performance in the video to follow the conventions and characteristics of the indie rock genre and also to follow the style of other music videos by The Black Keys. For my groups section of the music video we decided to add narrative fuzz through editingIn our section of the video we cut from the main singer performing in a field to him walking up to a girl by a tree. We paid homage to the 'psychedelic' style of music from the 1960s by using the technique of video merging. This also gave the video an artistic and unique look. Finally we used slo-motion on the clips where the water balloon hit the lead singer, this focuses the audiences attention on the rebellious act.

When applying Goodwins theory to our clip it is evident that the over all the relationship between the lyrics and visuals are amplifiedOur narrative of the main singer being rejected by the girl reflects the lyrics ‘I’m a lonely boy'

The Black keys is a rock band and therefore there star image has themes of rebellion and youth. We used costume to connect this theme by tying ties around the band members heads. Also we used props such as the water balloons which were thrown at the lead singer to portray rebellion and agression.  We followed Dyer’s structure of the Paradox's by making the band appear ordinary and extraordinary. We did this by choosing the location as a field as this is very simple.

The relationship between music and visuals are also amplified. In our section we included performance, this entailed playing instruments and the lead singer miming.  In certain parts of the music video the cutting rate is illustrative as the video cuts in time with the beat of the track.

Through out the video we used a range of camera techniques. For example we used high angles, CU, ECU, LS, handi cam and over the shoulder shot. This allowed us to create and effective and clear narrative and also make the performance aspect of the track become interesting. It became evident that movement during the performance shots were essential to create energy.

What have a gained from this task?

From this task I learnt that it is essential to thoroughly plan. Firstly, we didn't organise props efficiently and therefore some shots didn't go to plan and had to be discarded. Also we should have gone into detail on how long each shot needs to be. This is important when it comes to post production, if we had planned the length of each shot it would have been easier to edit within our timed slot and therefore sync the visuals with the music. This task also allowed me to experiment with slo-motion, I believe that it was very effective and I would definitely consider using this technique for our final music video.
