D.B: Music Video Analysis

Rae Morris - Skin

Location - inside a museum

Rae Morris is seen constantly throughout the music video and plays an important part in all of the scenes including with many close ups, she is miming the song to indicate that she is the singer. This is done to follow Dyer's recipe for creating a successful artist and depicting her star image of importance and supplying the consumer with a promise of a completed image.

Focusing on Goodwin's theories I can see that:
The relationship between visuals and lyrics is amplified for example when Rae sings "I spy a girl" there is a long shot of a girl who is barely visible implying that this is the girl she is spotting

Music is very smooth and graceful and the music video continues this theme with elegant dancers featuring heavily in the video.

There is a lot of voyeuristic treatment of the female body in order to create sexual magnetism and displays dominant values of the perfect female body in order to entice the audience into continued consumption of the video and song.

OK Go - The Writing's On the Wall

Location - A warehouse

Looking at Goodwin's theory:
The relationship between the lyrics and visuals is amplified for example when the lyrics go: "there is writing on the wall" they have written this lyric on the wall

The music is mostly performance rather than narrative because although it does not show the band playing instruments they mime throughout the entirety of the video. There is not a specific

Dyer:
The star image is created for the band because the video is intelligently creative by experimenting with illusions and manipulating the audiences belief at what they are seeing. The band is therefore given an image of being extraordinary and having a heightened creative talent and uniqueness.

The video does not suggest anything about the band's life prohibiting their completed image and following the paradox that they must both be present and absent.

Archer:
The artists often look directly at the camera creating a feeling of connection to the audience. Archer suggested that one of the differences of music videos is that they cerate a parasocial intimacy with close-up and 'feature a first person mode of address'.

Foster the People - Coming of Age

Location - A stage where the band perform, a house, a cliff,

The relationship between the lyrics and visuals are amplified because the song is about rights of passage you go through and various stereotypical clips are shown but they don't link literally to the words being sung.

The relationship between the music and visuals is also amplified for example at the beginning the cutting rate goes in time with the music but because the beat isn't very sharp a dissolve cut is used to go from one shot to the next,

There are cuts between a performance and narrative during the video in order to create an captivating video for the audience and create the star image of the band by using them as a selling point and display their talent to show their star quality.

  1. I love the technique of perspective used in the writings on the wall video, maybe we could somehow use this concept in our video, also I think the use of overlay in foster the peoples video is very effective
