L.P: Analysing 3 Music Videos

Aluna George- Best be believing

1. Genre à dance music
·      They are all dancing in the video
·      Lead singer- Aluna, is dancing whilst getting on with her normal life which seems to be in a mental hospital
·      Athletic skinny girls dancing in white sportswear
·      Lighting is all bright
·      At the beginning ‘Prof. Reid’s Dance Rehabilitation clinic’ is written across the screen as Aluna George gets dragged into the clinic, which establishes that these girls are in a clinic and they are dancers, it also establishes that this is a dance song.

2. Lyrics and visuals à amplified
It is not obvious with the lyrics that the music video would be set in a mental hospital, but it does say things such as “cracks in my pain”

3.Music and visuals à illustrative
She is singing the lyrics, and also everyone is dancing to the beat.

4. Close-ups à quite a few close ups of Aluna George singing, for example there are a few at about 1.40 seconds in and she is connected to a machine signing and dancing, this reinforces
Her makeup also looks really perfect in all of the shots, with pink lipstick and flawless skin
Also she smiles a lot in all her videos, this is a visual motif and is shown in some of the close-ups

5. The Notion of looking à it is very much about Aluna George, she leads the video and one of her visual motifs is her fashionable clothes and slim figure that is enforced in this video.

Kiesza- Hideaway

1. Genre à dance music
·      Cool clothes, all fashionable reflecting the young market
·      Bright clothes so they stand out on the street
·      The lead singer is dancing with other people on the street, all choreographed really well
·      Clever because it’s all taken in one take, and all the dance moves are perfect

2. Lyrics and visuals à disjunctive
The only thing that the video shows is Kiesza dancing down a street and that has nothing to do with the lyrics, which are talking about someone, being a ‘hideaway’

3. Music and visuals à illustrative
She is singing the lyrics as she dances to the beat all the way through the music video.

4. Close-ups à there are no close-ups, it is all done in one shot with the camera tracking backwards as Kiesza dances towards the camera.

5. The Notion of looking à Kiesza leads the video, and the camera focuses her in the centre all the way through the video. You can’t keep your eyes off her as she dances down the street standing out against the urban backgrounds with her red hair and bright fashionable clothes.

Disclosure- F for you ft. Mary J Blige

1. Genre à dance music
·      There is dancing in the video
·      There is a DJ set with the two disclosure brothers
·      The after effects editing colours are all quite bright and glowing which makes it effective

2. Lyrics and visuals à illustrative
The lyrics are sang and also they come out of the screen in an illustrative manner, sometimes they even come out of their mouth

3. Music and visuals à illustrative
There is such a close relationship between the visuals and the music all the way through this video; there is an image for every beat in the song.
There are illustrations of lines and dots around their heads that thump to the beat, also swirls that flicker around the figures along with the music.
There is also one shot at 1.18 seconds where Mary J Blige claps along with the music

4. Close-ups à There are a few close-ups of the Disclosure brothers, and they are the artists of this track so it give them prevalence
There is an example close-up at 2.48 seconds of one of the disclosure brothers in which you can see him singing, their visual motif of the illustration of the eyes and mouth is clear here by the lines over his face and eyes (this happens all the way through the video)

5. The Notion of looking à the artist is the Disclosure bothers, and they are in the video however they don’t lead it, Mary J Blige does however she is the main vocals. You can see that the Disclosure Brothers are the ones creating the music though because they are doing this in the video.

  1. I think that the animations in the disclosure video look very effective. Maybe we could try to imitate something similar in our music video.
