Group: 30th October London shoot

We changed our original plan of going up to early at 5:21 because of the cost it would be to get up there at peak-time. We changed instead to go at 9:12 and it worked out a lot cheaper.

We followed all of the shots we planned on our call sheet but many of the best shots were filmed through guerrilla style and were spontaneous.

We filmed for most of the day at the Southbank skate park because the shots looked so beautiful and perfect for how we wanted it. When we go to the skate park we realised that it was quite dark because of the concrete roof above it. We found that at the back there we gaps in the ceiling that let the sunlight shine through so we gravitated towards these areas.

We wanted to go up early in case there were a lot of the skaters that would prohibit us from filming. However, there were only young kids skating so when we walked down to the place where the light was shining through the ceiling they moved out of our way and left us to it.

We were also worried about our dancers not being brave enough to enthusiastically dance while we recorded them. We chose some great people to do it because they were very enthusiastic and Amy was fairly shy but overall they went full out with their dancing.

After we finished at Southbank we went to the toilets in Camden market. The stairwells were public so we had to be quick when filming so that other people didn't get into the shot. Every time the stairwell was free we would quickly get our actors to dance up and down them. When filming in front of the graffiti in the toilets we made sure to keep out of the other people's way and occasionally people would film us filming, fortunately our actor's did not get distracted by this.

L.P: 30th October shoot evaluation

We went up to London by train and got to south bank at about 10 am, it took me around an hour to do the girls make-up. I used gold paint and made huge flicks over their eyes like gold eyeliner, I then used eyelash glue to stick gold glitter under and around their eyes. I also painted their lips gold and put the gold glitter over their lips, this created an almost robotic/ outer space feel. The gold represents the name of the song, and also the link between Isaac and the dancers- they are the happiness inside his head, and in later shots we have them painting gold over his face before they disappear and he becomes unhappy again, as his 'happiness' has disappeared.

When we were shooting I did some mid-shots of the dancers dancing in front of the graffiti wall and also some shots of Isaac himself. I filmed a shot where he was sitting on the floor and then danced to a standing opposition. I also help construct a lot of the shots, placing the camera so the Isaac was central to the dancers. When we went to Camden I filmed the dancers and Isaac dancing down the steps towards the camera, and also some away from the camera. I made sure Isaac mouth synced the words correctly by saying the words to the songs and then he'd repeat it in time with the music. However, when we went to the stairwell we didn't realise how many people would be walking around Camden, meaning that we had to get really quick shots as the public kept walking up and down the steps. This was a problem we were able to overcome as we just shot quickly when the stairwell was free.

L.P: Concept development

Today we have carried on with storyboarding and risk assessment
we have also decided that Isaac is going to be dressed in the same clothing through out the whole video so  it creates a cycle.

Group: 23rd October shooting

On the 23rd October we went to our rooftop location and filmed part of our sequence of the music video. We filmed with our main character Isaac.

When we arrived it was spitting with rain, however we still continued with the shoot. We had brought waterproofing for our camera so were able to proceed. Also the rain allowed us to film some very effective shots of our main character walking through puddles.

Some difficulties which we encountered were that the lens on the camera kept becoming speckled with rain. Also the floor became slippery and more dangerous for our crew and cast.

At the location we used a tri-pod, Camera frame and track and dolly. These were all utilised to create some professional and steady shots.

At the end of the shoot we have not captured all of the footage needed but due to time restraints we have decided to return at the later date of the 4thh November. We didn't complete shots of smoke, and need some more shots of our main character portraying his depressed state through clear non-verbal language. Also after reviewing the footage we have noticed that the main characters jacket becomes done up in the last few shots. Either we will re shoot these shots with his jacket undone or we will have to include a shot of the main character doing up his jacket so not to break continuity.
We also need some more CU shots of the bracelet on his wrist as this prop is essential. We were unable to obtain the speakers needed for one of the shots so we must film this on the 28th.

Group: Development

On the 21st October we learnt how to create animations on After Effects, we would like to feature this throughout our video. We practiced this technique using some of our footage and this is how it came out:

These are instructions on how we animated our footage. We will recreate this in our video:

Import footage
Click-drag footage onto new comp button
Rename comp footage1 and duplicate comp (resulting comp automatically named footage2)
Enter footage1 comp timeline and translate 1 pixel left and up
Click-drag footage1 comp onto new comp icon (resulting comp automatically named footage3)
Rename footage3 comp to effector
Enter effector comp timeline
Click-drag footage2 comp into effector timeline below footage1 comp
Select footage1 and choose Keying/Difference Matte from the effect menu
Edit Difference Matte settings in the Effects Controls panel
Change View to                           Matte Only
Change Difference layer to       3.footage2
Change other settings to preference
Click-drag original footage onto new comp button and rename Render_comp
Click-drag effector comp onto Render_comp timeline. Place above original footage
Change effector comp layer mode to Add

D.B: Animatic Response

  • What was your individual contribution to the storyboarding and animatic task?
Here are the storyboards that I drew:

Me and Alex went to Nero together and spent 3 hours taking photos of each individual storyboard and uploading it to Alex's computer. We then put all of the photos onto Alex's editing software: Final Cut Pro X.
I had downloaded the song so we put that also onto the software. I edited an experimental part where the animatic quickly cuts from the dancers on opposite side of the screen repetitively. Me and Alex took it in turns putting the photos in order and then cutting them down to fit with the song. I edited the bit where the writing 'Gold Is Not Enough' cuts in time to the track.
  • What have you learned from completing this process in terms of, camera - distance, movement and angle; editing - duration and transitions; sound - relationship between lyrics/sound and visuals, emotional colouring; Mise en scene - locations, character blocking?
I have realised that there is a large variety of shots we need. Not only do we need a lot of footage but we need a large range of different shots because we have learnt that we want a very fast cutting rate. We want each shot to on average be no longer than 2/3 seconds, this will match the genre conventions and create the energetic feel we want. We have thought of these specific shots that we now want to include:
> a low angle of the dancers legs.
> a LS of Isaac on the roof
> a CU of Isaac's face
> a high angled shot of the dancers - we can achieve this on the stairwell as well as the numerous levels available at the skate park.

The cutting rate of the scenes on the rooftop will be longer because we have positioned them in the slower parts of the song in order to create an emotional emphasis and to exaggerate his portrayal of depression. This will relate the still, cinematic, slightly 'film noir-esque' shots to the slower pace of the music.

From the drawings we created we have realised that we need to fill the shots by character blocking the dancers close together and the camera to be close to them. We definitely want a lot of handicam shots when they are dancing to add movement and enable the audience to feel involved. We want to associate the music with the visuals by placing all of the dancing scenes when the beat is fast and having a highly saturated
  • How else has this process fed into the development of your concept?

  • How was this task more complex/different from the same task at AS?

  • What were the challenges/difficulties of carrying out this task?

Group: 20th Ocotober Concept Development

On the 20th October we had an in depth group discussion about our concept with Ms Fernandez.
She has suggested that we definitely think we will include the following:

  • To cut from the dancers back to Isaac on the roof we should use a 360 pan cut.
  • We should consider that he should be in all of the locations even the conceptual shots to connote that it is all in his mind.
  • Use a prop throughout the scenes when he is happy throughout the video that is only shown in the last shot of him on the roof to connect the narrative fuzz that his reality is confused. It will create an enigma and connect the two locations.
This is the prop which we have chosen to use:

  • Throughout the dancing shots the dancers could wipe gold paint over him in different places, covering his body more and more in gold - connecting to the lyric 'Gold is not enough' to convey that although he is happy is gaining more and more self doubt. The shots of Isaac on the roof would have all of these gold marks but they would not be indistinguishable or noticeable thorough strategic camera positioning and blurring. The end shot will also show his whole body with these gold markings on him. We need to think about how we will show the gold mark because the shots of him on the roof are meant to be in black and white.
  • Mr Fiveash has incredibly worked out how we could include animation in our music video using AfterEffects. We will shoot filler shots of him pulling extreme, to the point of being quite unsettling, facial expressions of him screaming and smiling. These shots are made to unsettle the audience and will be used as filler shots and interspersed throughout the video.
  • In todays lesson we completed more storyboarding and decided on what our main character would wear. We have decided that we are going to be filming the rooftop scenes on Thursday 23rd October so that we will have enough time to reshoot if we find out that the footage is not good enough. We will be shooting in the evening so during the double lesson we have that day we will be completing the risk assessment and call sheets for the roof location. We will however need some gold face paint for this shoot which we have not bought yet so hopefully we will be able to find some in time.
  • We have almost completely storyboarded the rooftop scene and definitely will by tomorrow.

L.P: Video Inspiration

BANKS- Brain

- We want to cut the screen so that it has a circle with moving images in the centre
- We want to have kaleidoscope patterns
- We want to use make-up like this on the dancers in our video- gold beads over the eye and gold shimmery eye shadow
- We want to have some shots in black and white and some shots in colour
- We want to have mirrored shots
- We want to have shots with hands reaching

Group: Concept Development 17th october

-We have decided to use artificial lighting for the shots of our main character infront of a  greenscreen. we didnt like the look of natural lighting so we have decided to use the drama room at our school as the location to shoot this in. We know how to use the lighting and we will go on a location recce there as soon as possible.

- When we film our main character infront of the greenscreen we want his costume to be black as this way he will slightly blend into the background we will be applying in post production.

- Through out our video we will be playing with the concept 'gold is not enough' relating it to the main character that he isnt enough. We will portray this by having gold featured through out the video linking it to the character. One specific shot we would like to achieve if have gold kaleidoscope patterns overlayed on his eyes during the bridge of the song to represent him as gold.

-Our video will have an amplified relationship with the lyrics as we will play with the concept of Gold and his self doubt.

D.B: Contribution to Pitch

We all went round to Laurel's house when we first worked on the pitch. We worked together to set out the layout of the Pitch and then split up the categories between us so we could work on the concept of each of them.
My contribution:
Treatment:
> I wrote the treatment:

Lighting:
> Some of the lighting will be natural day light because we are shooting outside during the day and this will be hard to control or manipulate.
> When Isaac is miming or dancing in front of the green screen we will use low-key lighting and use the lights in the drama rooms at Tech.
> We will also use low-key lighting in the garage to create interesting shadows and silhouettes of the dancers.
> The end of our video will be lit with street lights inspired by Flume's video Drop the Game and Gorgon City's videos. This will be because we will film during the night and it will add to the Urban atmosphere and melancholy nature of the narrative.

Props:
> Our track begins quite suddenly and we want our main character to walk up and press play on an IPod attached to speakers that would then start the track.
> We want to use smoke to represent youth and how people are more prone to addiction when stressed or sad. We will use reverse and forward shots to show the smoke going in and out of his mouth.
> We want to use gold paint to link to the lyrics and we may use the ECU shots as a backdrop for the green-screen shots.

Camera Movement:
> When we film the dancers or any of the happy scenes with Isaac we want there to be a lot of camera movement to emphasise their joy and invoke empathy with the audience. This was inspired by the music video for Wekeed - Wild Child
> We want to track our main character whenever he is moving to connote prevalence.
> When Isaac is miming or dancing in front of the green-screen we will use a tripod to keep the camera completely still.

Cutting:
> We were really inspired by Gorgon City's video that cuts from the front of a character to his back but with the same camera positioning. We want to imitate this but use a faster cutting rate between the two shot. We practiced this in a video using footage we took from our location reccie.
> We loved Bombay Bicycle Club's video Carry Me when it cuts between two characters in different shots but on the opposite side to the screen and it cuts between the shots so fast that you don't realise they're not in the same shot. We practised in the video we edited as well.
> We want to use stop motion to look as though Isaac is turning gold. This will link with the lyrics and fit in with the conceptual part of our video as we will reverse the shot after to take the paint off him.

Band Image:

> We have considered Dyer's theories of star image by representing Snakehips as illusive and creative with the visually stunning conceptual shots of the green screen and gold paint.
> We are following the paradoxes of the star being absent and present by obviously not having the artist feature in the video (this is conventional of dance music artists anyway) but present because our main character will break the fourth wall and looks directly at the camera.
The star will seem ordinary because he is wearing casual clothes and is present in everyday locations but extraordinary because he turns gold and is seen in 'other-worldly' locations with the green screen backgrounds.

Digipack:
> We want to do something similar to the Tourist edits because they are relevant to Snakehips' previous advertising.
> We want to use the kaleidoscope shots in the edits.

L.P: Questionnaire Response

We made a questionnaire on Survey Monkey for our audience research with questions that would allow our idea to be pushed forward. I sent the survey to about 40 of my friends on the social networking site, Facebook and about 30 of my friends responded. I came up with 3 questions that allowed open answers, the questions were:

Q. When listening to the track what visually first comes to mind?
A. We got some really good answers for this questions with the focus being on Bright colours and dancing, which is our aim. My favourite answer was 'Vibrant with a sense of sadness and depression' as it describes our initial ideas really clearly. I also liked the answer 'in a field really early in the morning when it's not a proper party any more but there are a few people still partying', however this wouldn't be practical.

Q. What style of clothing would you imagine the characters to be wearing?
- Trainers, Adidas, Nike, Skinny jeans
- Vintage, 1950s, Velvet
- Bright colours, 1960s raver, bomber jackets
- 1960s flower power
- Indie large jumpers, patterns
A. Our intention for the answer to this question was either number 1 or number 3, and these were the most popular answers. With 19 votes for number 3 and 18 votes for number 1.

Q. What locations do you associate with the word urban? List 3 or more locations
A. Our aim for this question was some locations in London and also general urban locations for example skate parks and roof tops and places with graffiti art, we already had Camden, Brick Lane and South park as locations we may want to shoot in. We got some really good responses, with Camden being mentioned a lot of times and London as well. Some people also mentioned Brighton which is where our practice video was shot, and we went for an urban feel in this video using roof tops and shooting in front of graffiti art.

A.M: Digipack Development 16th October

We are considering have aspects of the Digipack in black and white and some part saturated. This will link with our video and slightly convey our aspect on bi-polar.

I went onto the video I edited and took screenshots. We could manipulate these images and change the colours, possibly to gold so that it links to the song.

We are considering having 'Snakehips' written in big letters on the front in a different kaleidoscope pattern to the background.

L.P: Contribution to the Pitch

This is what I discussed in the Pitch for our ideas for our music video to Bondax- Gold (Snakehips Remix):

Mood boards
We started by discussing the genre of dance music, we had all made our own mood boards. My mood board focused behind London Grammar and Disclosure, with ideas of dancing and animation like in the Bombay Bicycle Club music video to Carry Me. This shows lots of animations that we are thinking about portraying in our video. I have also looked at pictures of ideas for our make-up, such as gold glitter over the characters eyes.

Characters
Our main character has Bipolar Disorder, which is a mental disorder characterised by periods of elevated mood and periods of depression. During mania an individual feels or acts abnormally happy, energetic or irritable. We are going to film him on the roof with a subtle message that he is thinking about suicide. To make his bipolar clear we are going to contrast black and white shots with saturated shots to convey his mental disorder.
We are also going to use female dancers, 2 of which are coming with us up to our location in London to shoot and the other 3 are going to shoot with the lights in a garage.

Costume and make-up
Our main character is going to wear skinny jeans, styled after Darwin Deez. He is also going to change t-shirts in different shots and we are also going to have shots where he is wearing the brand Adidas. For example, a bright orange Adidas jumper which can be saturated in the happy shots. One of our inspirations being Jungle's music video to The Heat.
For the Dancers, we are styling them after the dancers in Aluna George's videos and Aluna George herself. We are going to use bomber jackets and also style some of their make-up like the girl with the flick eyeliner. We are also going to use lots of gold make-up simply to link to the lyrics in the song. We are inspired by the music video to Lorde- Tennis Court (Flume remix) and the se of gold glitter over the ladies body, and also the music video to Clean Bandit- A&E and the use of gold paint in the stop motion effect.

Visual Hooks
The first few shots are very important to catch the audiences eye, allowing them to decide whether they want to continue watching. That's why we are making the title really stand out like Tourist does. Another visual hook is the vibrant dancing, we are going to make the shots saturated and the clothing bright colours like we did in our Brighton video.

Overlaying
In editing, we are going to use overlaying, our ideas are to overlay words for example lyrics and also overlay colours, in the shots where the character I portrayed as happy. Lastly we are planning to overlay shapes, our main inspiration being Clean Bandit.

Audience Research
One of our questions was "What style of clothing would you imagine the characters to be wearing?" The most popular choices were trainers, Adidas brands ect and also bright colours. These are the look we were planning to go for so that was a success. Another question was "When listening to the track what visually first comes to mind?" We had some really good answers which backed up what we imagined. A lot of people said 'dancing and bright colours' and also 'kaleidoscopes' which we are using as our Digi pack. My favourite answer was "vibrancy but also a sense of sadness and depression" because this is exactly the aim we are going for. Our most popular answer for "What setting would our video expect to be shot in?" was the one we aimed for "early in the morning when it's sunny".

Group: Feedback for Pitch

After we presented our pitch we were asked questions concerning aspects of our concept that the class was unsure of. This is the feedback that we received after our pitch:

> People were unclear of the purpose of the dancers.
- We explained how we were planning on having dancers in our video because it is a genre characteristic of the dance music genre and we wanted to add a lightness to the serious topic we want to portray. We did not provide any practise shots or examples of how we were going to shoot them and there were concerns on what the purpose of them even was.

- We have had a discussion on the fact that we want the dancers to represent the character's frame of mind. They will have gold painted in a line across their eyes in order to take away their identity and individuality because we want them to simply represent that he is in a very joyous and elevated mood. The dancers will be absent while he is depressed to follow this.

>There were concerned about Isaac's portrayal of bi-polar.
- In order for Isaac to portray an accurate representation of bipolar we are going to brief him on all the research we have done so that he is highly knowledgeable on the subject. We will direct him in all the shots to change his non-verbal language accordingly.

- When he is portraying depression we will make sure that he doesn't make any eye-contact with the camera; that he doesn't interact with any other people in the shot; that he has neutral facial expressions; and that his movements are slow. During the scenes of him being ecstatic we want to make sure that he has a lot of energy in his movements and that he seems incredibly focused and that his facial expressions portray joy.

>Some members of the class were unsure how the video would end up looking with the vast array of techniques we have planned to use.
- There were concerns that we had too many ideas and that it would make the video look unfocused and unprofessional. They explained that we needed to concentrate on certain aspects that we could execute at a high quality. So that all of us in the group could have the same vision on how the video will end up we went to Alex's house after the media lesson and wrote down the timings next to each lyric and wrote next to it which technique we would like to use. This can be seen on the blog post Group: Development 14th October.

- A specific query from Dan was how we would create the kaleidoscope effect that we had planned for because it isn't an effect that is available on Premier. Alex has this effect on her own editing software: FinalCut Pro X and we have created an example video so we could practice with the effect and demonstrate how we wish to achieve it.

>People were unsure about how much of the video was narrative and how we would mix in the conceptual shots.
-This has also been established in the post where we wrote all the shot ideas and what we would like to happen

>What would visually be on screen when Isaac is portraying his depressed state.
We have considered his non-verbal language and have decided to do close ups and have little eye contact with the camera and with neutral facial expression. Also at the start of his narrative we will suggest his consideration of suicide through location and his non-verbal language.
[add in the screen shots from that video]

Group: Pitch

A.M: Contribution to pitch

On the 13th October we pitched our music video ideas to the class. These are the specific areas which I spoke about.

Locations
>We looked at a variety of video as inspiration for our locations. We looked at artists such as Gorgon City, Passion Pit, Disclosure and Flume. We liked the urban theme in there videos including shots of graffiti, buildings, lights and signs. We wanted to recreate this in our video so went on a location recce to London.

>Firstly we went to Southbank to look at the skate park. This is a very urban scene due to all the graffiti covering the park. It looked very effective on camera and provided a brilliant background for our dancers. While walking around Southbank we took some shots of the river and people walking down streets which we hope to include.

>Then we made our way to Camden. Here we found some streets with more street art, a hallway and staircase with graffiti and a pathway which used coloured lighting.
We are also going to use a rooftop which will portray the increase risk in suicide during the main characters depressed stages.

>Our final location will be a garage. Here we will film the dancers using strobe lighting to create shots of silhouettes and coloured lights.

Shot Ideas
>At the start of the video we are going to have a low angle tracking shot of our main characters feet walking. This will hide the identity of the character and give him a sense of mystery. This shot will then stop and the title will appear on screen.
>We want to have LS of signs, buildings and grafitti which will be around London. We will use these as filler shots and establishing shots.
>When filming our dancers we want to use a variety of shots such as CU, MS and LS. The CU shots will look very effective and interesting when in slow motion.
>When we film our main character miming we will break the rule of thirds and place him in the centre of the screen. This is conventional of music videos and will ensure that the audience's full attention on the main character.

Editing
>We are going to use the kaleidoscope effect to make our video visually pleasing. We will use shots of lights, fireworks and sparklers which will all be tinted gold in post production if not already gold. This will be used as the backdrop for our green screen and also be featured in certain parts of the video. This will play on our concept 'gold is not enough'.
>During the chorus we will have the lyrics appear on screen 'Gold is not enough' this will make our concept more clear to our audience.
>We want to use split screens on certain parts of the video. This will be used to contrast his different emotions on screen at the same time. We would like to half both shots of the split screen in the same location but one half will have saturated colour grading and the main character will have positive non-verbal language such as dancing. Where as on the other half the screen will be black and white with negative non-verbal language to connote his depressed state.
>We want to use multiple screen during some parts of the video. Each screen would have a slightly different start point of the same clip to show his gradual change in emotion.

Challenges
>We wanted to create repeatability by interpretating the lyrics in a unique way so that the audience would have to continuely consume.
>We are concerned that we may portray bipolar disorder inaccurately.
Technical Issues
>We need to ensure that when filming we use a high frame per second rate so that when we use time stretch the footage won't go jittery.
>When filming we need to keep the camera movement fluid and smooth so that the shots look professional.
>Our equipment could be damaged if the weather isn't good when filming outside in London.
>We could get public interference as we are filming in London which is a very busy place and the skatepark could be crowded with skaters.
>When we imported our footage onto premiere we didn't change the aspect ratio and so our footage ended up with a black rim around the edge.
Overcoming our problems
>We will set our camera to a high frame rate.
>We will use stedi cam and a tripod to ensure that all of our shots are still and smooth.
>We have decided to film very early in the morning in London to avoid public interference. Also this will mean our dancers will be more confidence as they won't have an audience.
>When importing our footage on to Premiere we will ensure it is in the correct format.
>If it rains while we are filming outside at London we will use waterproofing for our equiptment and try to shoot undercover as much as possible.
>We have researched bi-polar disorder  thoroughly to ensure that we portray the disorder correctly.

Group: Development 14th October

On the 14th October we sat down as a group and decided some rough ideas of what order we wanted certain shots to be in:

-For example we have decided that for the first verse the main character will be alone on a rooftop shot in black and white with minimal editing to mimic the slower pace of the beginning of the track. This would be perfect for us to portray the main character in his depressed state.

-In order for Isaac to portray an accurate representation of bipolar we are going to brief him on all the research we have done so that he is highly knowledgeable on the subject.

-Once the song reaches the chorus and becomes more lively we will have shots of the main character dancing at Southbank and around London (Camden and Bricklane) , also we will include our dancers and introduce many editing techniques such as jump cuts, slow motion and use of the green screen. As the verses go on we will use split screens to represent his change in moods, compare the contrast between the two and demonstrate his reminiscence of the time when he was happy.

-At the end of the last chorus the main character will be at the rooftop again in black and white. Once this has ended he becomes happy again and the narrative part of the song will end.  After the last chorus their is an instrumental chorus until the end of the track. This part of the video will be purely conceptual playing on the lyrics of 'Gold is not enough' and using bold edits that match the energetic tempo of the song.

-Finally, at the end of the instrumental, we will again return to the rooftop and use similar shots which we used at the beginning of the video. This is to represent the emotional cycle he is going through and it would fit in well with the track because the music fades out to silence at the end and this seems fairly reminiscent.

-The Dancers will be representing his frame of mind when he is in an elevated mood. This was decided to give purpose to the presence of the dancers. For example, when our main character is very energetic and slightly manic and dancing the dancers will be present in the shot or shots of him dancing will be juxtaposed with shots of the dancers to exaggerate his energy. During the scenes were he is incredible mellow and sad the dancers will be absent connoting his helpless and lonely feelings.

D.B: Questionnaire Reflection

We needed to come up with a questionnaire that we could send to a control group in order to test our concept ideas. From all the people we sent the questionnaire to we got 43 responses in total. When coming up with the questions we decided to come up with 3 each, these are mine:

> Q) Which aspect of mental illness do you believe are relevant to youth today?

A) The most common answers we were given were: depression; eating disorders; body dismorphia from unrealistic media and societal expectations; anxiety disorders; paranoia. This was really helpful because it made us realise how interested people our age were in the portrayal of mental illness with youth. There was a consens as well on the fact that mental illness is not restricted when it comes to young people simply because of their age and a few people mentioned that they wanted to see a portrayal of a mental illness that wasn't very commonly presented in the media.

We wanted this question to be open so that people could give several answers with possible explanations with their answers. We want our video to have a deeper meaning so that it can educate and inform audiences on issues that they may not have considered before. We wanted to portray Bipolar disorder because it is an issue me and Laurel are interested in and have been affected by. A couple people mentioned bipolar disorder in our questionnaire but it wasn't very common and this proved to us how important it was that we portray this mental illness in order to spread its awareness.
  > Q) What age range do you associate with dance music

A) The most common answer given was the age range 16-25. Everyone gave the answers for a youthful person to feature in the video.

We had predicted that this would the results especially because we gave our questionnaire to people between the age 17-19 and they would go for an age range that they could relate to.

> Q) What setting do you expect this video to be shot in?
- Early in the morning, when it's sunny
- Early in the morning, when it's raining
- At night
- During the day, when it's sunny
- During the day, when it's raining

 A) 20 people said that they think it should be shot early in the morning, when it's sunny and 18 people said that they thought we should shoot during the day, when it's sunny.

We wanted to include some closed questions in our questionnaire because we were unsure the type of conditions we should shoot in. We were not sure how we wanted the weather to be when shooting because the rain would demonstrate his sadness and the sun would connote his joy - the pathetic fallacy.
We were cross between during the day and early in the morning when it's sunny because of timings for shooting and whether we wanted to shoot the sun rising. We have realised that shooting during a sunrise is very difficult because the lighting changes so suddenly and is something we cannot control. Seeing as people agree that both are almost equally relevant we will film during the day rather than early in the morning.

A.M: Questionnaire Reflection

What is your interpretation of the lyrics?

A man is trying to get a girl however he believes that he isn't good enough for her.
- He doesn't seem good enough for her

- someone who feels they are not good enough, they are gold but gold is worthless compared to a diamond, used to pay for diamonds etc.

the person it's about doesn't feel like they're enough, they feel worth less than other people and everything's moving too fast for them and they feel overwhelmed by it

This is an open question and allowed are audience to respond as they pleased and didn't restrict any of there opinions. This meant that we recieved a lot of helpful information and thoughts. As well it shows a clear and strong trend as the answers had no restrictions.

These are a few of the responses which we recieved from this question. The overall way that our target audience interpreted the lyrics was that a character wasn't good enough and usually this was related to the fact a male wasn't good enough for a particular girl. From these answers we are able to compare our interpretation of the lyrics to ours. Us as a group all interpreted the lyrics as a male who felt worthless. However we wanted our video to hve repeatability. We did this by interpreting the lyrics in a more indepth and unique way.    Reference actual lyrics
We decided to portray the main character to have the disorder bi-polar, therefore through out the video our character will have elevated moods and low moods which will reflect his self worth growing and lowering. By having a unique interpretation of the lyrics it will make our audience want to consume the video and figure out the message.

Also another trend in the responses is that they thought that 'gold' was worthless. And that the main character was related to the worthlessness. This is why we are including gold face paint and glitter and a gold bracelet prop on our main character to represent that he can feel worthless and 'not enough' '

This question allowed us to see what an audience usually expected a dance track music video to be structured and formed like. The general trend was that most of our audience expected a conceptual video with some narrative and a little performance. We are conforming to these trends. Our video has a very clear concept which is heavily featured through out the video. 'Gold is not enough' is te concept and the gold props and make up represent this. We also have a narrative aspect as our main character is being visually shown thinking about his different moods and memory's he has had while he is on the rooftop. His emotions are shown to be changing in a cycle. Finally put performance aspect of the video is our main character miming the lyrics of the song. This is to make it clear that he is connected to the song . Also dancing will be featured through out as this is obviously very conventional for dance tracks.

What videos can you think of that include stop motion?

This question was important to find out whether our audience were knowledgable and enjoyed stop motion. The general response was that either they didn't know what stop motion was or that they enjoyed it. If we were able to re do the questionnaire we should have explained what stop motion was so that we could have collected more useful data.
These are some of the videos which our audience mentioned . This information has allowed us to heavily consider using stop motion and move our editing techniques forward.

A.M: 6 Frames for Technical Analysis

I particularly liked this shot due to the intensity it creates. The ECU of the eyes breaks the forth wall and connects the character to the audience. Seeing characters facial expressions is essential when creating character exposition and I feel this shot would be very useful for our main character as his emotions are a key part in our narrative. I also like the low key lighting used in this shot. It creates atmospheric and dramatic shadows which therefore highlight his right eye in particular.

As we will have a performance aspect in our video with our main character miming we could use similar lighting to this shot. I think that the lighting high above highlights the girls face and makes her stand out. This would be very effective for our video and ensure that the audience is focusing on the main character.

In our music video we are going to include female dancers. These shots gave me inspiration as to how we could shoot our dancers. I liked the variety of shots they used such as CU, MS and LS. This will make the our video more diverse and visually enticing. Also I loved the use of low key and strobe lighting, it made the dancing scenes more up beat and create beautiful shadows.

I liked the composition of this shot. I think that a single dancer looks effective and the fact that the composition adheres to the rule of thirds draws the audiences eye straight to the character. We could replicate this shot when at Southbank with our dancers.

This shot inspired us to do some low angle shots following our main characters feet. I liked the fact that a shot of someones feet hides their identity and makes them an enigma. This would be effective at the start of our video to make our character an enigma. Then we would slowly build is character exposition.

These shots both use a high angle slow pan both are used very effectively. The  first shot is used in a club which highlights the strobe lighting and is a great establishing shot for the club scene allowing the audience to see the bigger picture. The second shot pans down to reveal a character sitting down. This makes him look very small and vulnerable, we could imitate this technique for our main character when he is feeling in a low mood.
