Group: Brighton Reccie Evaluation

- What problems/ obstacles did you encounter?
- What did you learn that you can take to your own location reccies?

On the 18th September we went to Brighton to complete a location reccie and create a video montage that practiced shots we want to use in our final music video piece. We were given the brief to get specific shots including:
- POV handicam
- Tracking
- Close-ups
- 360 degree pan
- Low angles and high angles.

These were our aims before we went to Brighton:
Location:
- Film on top of a roof.
- Go down the lanes and find some urban areas with graffiti.
- Visit some shops
- The sea front.

Costume:
- Casual clothing with an urban theme.

Camera:
-ECU
-CU
-MS
-MLS
-LS
-ELS
-handi cam shots
-POV shots
We hope to experiment with different depths of fields. This will be interesting to film on top of the rooftop and create some very interesting shots. Also we want to use the manual focus on the camera to film lights out of focus.

Shots for editing:
- a character is walking through a crowd slowly and then speed up the footage so that the rest of the public are walking quickly.
- action shots so that we can reverse some shots.
- slow-motion shots
- Possibly of some birds flying.

Composition of shots:
- use the rule of thirds when shooting some of our shots
- in others we will break this rule to create some unique and artistic shots.
This will allow us to find out what shots look effective and professional and also we can find out whether Brighton could be our final location choice. I think the colours will look bright and interesting on the film.

What did we achieve?
Location:
We went to the first car park roof we could find which was situated in Churchill Square we managed to get some really great shots here for example the LS of Alex jumping off the wall. Next to this car park was an even taller one and after filming us walking down all the stars from the first car park we went up to the roof. We saw some pigeons sitting on the roof and Laurel ran up to them as they flew away we videoed them.
We wanted to have a lot of graffiti in our video so we walked around the lanes to find some in order to create an urban vibe. Down the lanes we also filmed in a shop called Snoopers Paradise that contained a lot of mirrors we used to film Laurel's dancing feet and a fish eye mirror of all 3 of us. There was a photo booth in the shop and we thought it would add a casual and cute aspect in the video if we shot it after we got the photo.

Costume:
We wore our own clothes. We ensured that we were all wearing casual everyday clothing to represent ourselves as youths. Our costumes also fitted in with the beach town location.

Camera:
>POV

>Manual focus - shallow depth of field

>High Angles and
>low angles
>ELS
>CU
>MS
>LS
>Slow Left to Right pan
>Establishing shot
>360 pan
>Pan up and down
>Canted angle
>Birds eye view
>Handi cam

Editing:
>Dip to white- on beat of music

>Jump cuts- on roof and when Alex is outside the pub

>Slower cutting rate at start.

>Overlaying
>Parallel lines of action

>Reverse shots at start to beat of music

>Slow motion birds
>Appear and disappear
>Time stretch

>Seamless location change as Laurel continues to walk.

What problems/ obstacles did we face?
In the shot where the camera pans up to the Banksy graffiti and then down to Alex and Laurel a man walked in front of them and ruined the shot. We did not realise this until looking at the footage after the trip and we had to cut it our of the video.
We also didn't have enough time to do many shots on the sea front as we'd planned because we spent too much time in the lanes. It didn't matter so much because we got some really great shots in the lanes and we did manage to get a few shots on the beach.

What did we learn to take to our next reccies?
Time management is a key thing that we need to work on when going to location reccies because we didn't manage to do that well.
When we go to a location we need to make sure we film around the location as well as the one specific place we had planned to go to in case we change our minds in the future and it turns out to be better.
We also need to make sure we take pictures of everything we think we would consider to film and remember exactly where it is because it is possible we may forget.
